Rain in Ayampe, Las Tunas and Puerto López: how the area stands (November 6)

Overflowing rivers and streams, cut-off communities and repair work on the Ayampe river bridge. A sector-by-sector summary of what authorities and the press have reported, with sources.
Since October 31, rain linked to El Niño has pushed rivers and streams over their banks in southern Manabí. Here we gather, sector by sector, what Ecuador's Risk Management Secretariat, the ECU 911 emergency service, the provincial government and the press reported up to November 6, 2026. Conditions change quickly: check the official alerts and message us before you travel.
Ayampe
- The Ayampe river is listed as overflowing in the Risk Management Secretariat's report of November 3.
- On November 2, ECU 911 Portoviejo reported traffic congestion on Ayampe's main road after a ravine overflowed.
- At the bridge over the Ayampe river on the E15 (Ruta del Spondylus), crews are clearing debris and landslide material. The provincial government sent machinery to rebuild the roadbed and protect the riverbank.
- The flooding damaged Puerto López's drinking-water intake and treatment systems.
Puerto López and its communities
- The Ayampe and Buenavista rivers overflowed with the rain of October 31 and November 1, and again on the night of Wednesday, November 4.
- Five rural communities were cut off by damaged access roads: Río Plátano, La Colombia, Matapalo, Vueltas Largas and Guale.
- The provincial government delivered aid to 112 families on November 3. The provincial emergency committee reported about 360 affected families over 72 hours.
- Puerto López's municipal government remains in permanent session.
Las Cabañas
Las Cabañas, along with Los Platanales and San Isidro de Machalilla, was one of the sectors flooded on the night of November 4, when the local emergency committee announced the evacuation of families. The Las Cabañas stream is listed as overflowing in the official report of November 3.
Las Tunas
The Las Tunas stream is listed as overflowing in the Risk Management Secretariat's report of November 3.
Salango
Humanitarian aid reached Matapalo, a community in the Salango parish that was cut off, by air.
Cinco Cerros
Up to November 6 we found no official or press reports of closures in the Cinco Cerros area. It is a winding, hilly stretch of the road toward Santa Elena: in heavy rain, drive in daylight and with care.
At PlayaMagma
The farm was not damaged. Over the holiday, between November 1 and 2, a creek that is dry most of the year turned into a torrent on a downhill stretch of the access road and washed that part away. Neighbors and guests got the vehicles across and we built a footbridge: today you park before the river and walk to the farm. We tell the story with photos and videos in the post “The dry creek that became a river”.
