Temazcal: what it is, how it feels and how to prepare for your first ceremony
6 min readPlayaMagma
Darkness, red-hot stones, herbs over the fire and a heat that makes you let go. This is the temazcal, the ancestral sweat lodge we have at the farm, and here's what to know before you go in.
The farm's name isn't an accident. Playa for the sea minutes away. Magma for the energy of the earth and fire. And if there's one place at PlayaMagma where fire becomes an experience, it's the temazcal.
People often ask us what it is exactly, whether it's "too intense" and whether you have to believe in something to go in. Here's everything, as honestly as we can put it.
What is a temazcal?
It's a sweat lodge of Mesoamerican origin. The word comes from Nahuatl and is usually translated as "house of steam" or "house of heat". It's a low, dome-shaped structure, almost always dark inside, where volcanic stones heated for hours in a fire are placed. Herbal water is poured over them and steam fills the space.
Traditionally it's lived as a ceremony of cleansing and rebirth: you enter the earth, sweat out what you no longer need and come out different. You don't have to share any belief to enjoy it. For many, it's simply the deepest steam bath of their life.

How does it feel?
Hot. Very. But a humid, fragrant heat that builds over rounds, or "doors". Each round, new stones come in and the guide leads the moment with songs, silence or words. At some point the mind stops commenting and the body just breathes. Stepping out, the forest air feels like cool water.
What we hear most when people come out isn't "so hot", it's "so peaceful".
How to prepare
- Eat light that day and avoid heavy meals for 3–4 hours beforehand.
- Hydrate well from the morning on, and no alcohol before or after.
- Wear a swimsuit or light cotton clothes, and bring one towel to sit on and another for afterwards.
- Take off jewelry and metal: it heats up.
- Don't rush. After the ceremony your body will ask for rest, fruit and water.
The temazcal at PlayaMagma
Our temazcal is in operation for ceremonies and traditional wellness experiences, surrounded by the farm's tropical forest. It can be arranged during your stay or as part of a group retreat, alongside the yoga shala and the campfire. Ceremonies are organized in advance: message us on WhatsApp and we'll tell you about upcoming dates.
Water that heals, fire that transforms. It rarely feels as literal as when you step out of a temazcal and walk barefoot on damp earth under the stars.
